After slow gains in popularity throughout last century, there has been a huge increase in the popularity in the sport of poker in this decade. Texas hold em has become one of the most popular games in poker card rooms and casinos in Europe, North America, and also online because of television exposure and online betting websites on the internet. There are many professional poker players who have won millions of dollars in nationally televised tournaments. But the question arises, “Is poker a game of luck or skill?”

As in most sports where it is difficult to separate the good from the great, it seems that those on the winning side often classify poker as a skill as a way to reiterate how good they are. On the other hand, those who lose often pass their opponents’ victory off as luck. But in my opinion, there is undoubtedly a degree of skill that one must acquire to come out victorious more often than not in the game of poker. You must be able to read your opponent, be able to make the right decisions at the right time, and have the mental toughness when playing with one of those annoying players who try to talk you out of your game.

But even when you perform all of these actions correctly, there is still the aspect that you have no control whatsoever over what hand you or your opponents may be dealt. You also have no control over what cards are laid down on the flop, the turn and the river. You have the option of folding if the cards dealt to you seem unfavorable. You also have the option of bluffing or raising the wager to try to influence your opponent to make decisions, but in my opinion all of this seems relative to being lucky or unlucky.

With all this said, there will always be a debate over whether poker is a game for the skillful players or for the lucky. Maybe that is one of the qualities of the game that make it both fun and addictive to play for beginners and professionals alike.
